It was given to the company by David Remez, later appointed first Transportation Minister of the State of Israel. The Jewish Agency, The Histadrut and Eretz Israel Maritime Authority founded the company. The company began with the ship Kedma. After the establishment of the State, Zim transported refugees and new immigrants and over the years it established a large and diverse worldwide network.
